In this current climate of electronic chip shortages we are constantly finding that BOM items are not available, but that another manufacturer makes a near identical part.  (Not the same as multiple suppliers selling the same part)

How are you handling this information? Adding the additional part details as a comment against the original PN; adding a new item with the same PN?
